Subject: I am appealing to drop BIOL 330 from the fall of 2016.
Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances
On October 24th 2016 I had an appointment with Hayley to discuss dropping a course because I was feeling overwhelmed with my courses last semester. In the meeting I was feeling stressed and upset and Hayley was very nice to me and said it was no problem to drop the course and that I was to receive 25 of the cost of the course. During the meeting I felt much better and I was under the impression it was going to be taken care of and that the course was dropped. So I left the meeting feeling better and feeling confident the course was going to be dropped. On January 12TH 2017 I came into academic services to discuss my courses and degree plan and asked about BIOL330 because I noticed it was still in the drop down menu on OnQ and was wondering when that was going to be taken off. I was informed that the course was never dropped and became very confused and overwhelmed because I thought it was. The lady I had the meeting with today then got my record and looked at the file from my last meeting in which it says that we had discussed dropping the course but it was not written that she was to drop the course or I was. I do not remember the exact words of the conversation from then but I do remember not being told that I had to go home and drop the course myself. I had thought that the academic services was able to drop courses and switch courses and other tasks like that for students. After my meeting today we had chalked it up to what seems to be miscommunication from my last meeting. As previously stated I came into that meeting very emotional and came out of it feeling less stressed because I thought things were being taken care of. Today I was told that it was not guaranteed to be taken off my record and I am sure you understand why I was very upset that a failing grade for a course that I believed I was not even enrolled in and did not even get a chance to be able to do well in may stay on my record. I am trying my hardest to be a good student while maintaining involvement in my extracurricular activities and volunteer work and this fail is something that has negatively affected my GPA.
I am hoping that this will be able to be removed from my record and the 25 be reimbursed as if it was completed by October 24th. It seems to be that this was very much an unusual academic event of a miscommunication between myself and Hayley and I feel as such I should not be permanently affected for this. In the future if an academic situation comes up again, I will ensure that all information will be communicated well and understood.
