Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To The Associate Dean (Studies),This is my second appeal and is a reply to the decision that was made after the reading of my first appeal. Regarding one of the issues for dropping the course, I was not able to drop it because the mid-term exam mark was up for me to view on time therefore I was not able to make a decision on whether or not to drop it. Exam marks came in late and most were not viewed by students early enough to make a decision on whether or not to drop the course. That was one of the main issue, all other issues were personal and could not be helped as they were constant problems in the household that I was not able to avoid and I also do not have any documentation of such problems except for proof and evidence from my parents who could be contacted, or my siblings one in grade 10 and the other who is just entering University. I do not know any other way to provide evidence of the extenuating circumstances. Math has always been a course that I have had trouble with and having it all jam packed into a two month course made it extremely hard to handle which is why my marks were so poor. Exam marks were put up too late and I had no idea that after you send an appeal in you continue in the course so I stopped watching lectures, and doing assignments thinking I did not need to do any of that anymore. I am basically stuck now after receiving an email reminding me of exams, I believed I was done with the course after the appeal and did not have to continue doing work in it. I had no idea that until a decision was made you still continue to do the regular course work and because of this I have completely fallen behind in the course and expect to get a 0 in this course. The last appeal explained all the family problems and I have no way of giving any documentation but I could have letters written from both parents as evidence explaining the situation. I do in fact plan on getting academic help next year and counselling in order to better my academic success at Queen¿¿s University. I will constantly be getting appointments and getting help from upper years as well as possibly hiring a tutor. I am ready to give University my all and do not want to be held back by a bad mark in math which is why I am sending a second appeal to possibly change the previous decision. I have just had a rough first year and know everything will turn around in this coming year I just do not want this Math course to have a negative effect on my GPA because of mistakes that I made during the year. The mid-term marks were put up too late so I was not able to make a final decision until after the deadline since that was when I got my updated mark and on the appeal website that could be used as reasoning for dropping the course past the deadline. Any reconsideration will really be appreciated as this is the last time I will make such a mistake. I did not know about any of this beforehand due to the fact that I am just a first year. I made a huge mistake not dropping or even stopping myself from the course in the first place. This upcoming year will be completely different as I know of all the resources I have available to me and I will be using every resource available to better my marks and habits. I have a lot of positives planned for the future and this upcoming year and will definitely not make the same mistakes I did in my first year.
