Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I wish to appeal my POLS 243 final exam mark due to being unsatisfied with how the exam was graded, particularly the single answer section. After having requested to see my exam I feel that appealing this mark is the right route. Not only does this mark not accurately represent my knowledge and understanding of the material tested, I feel that there were multiple instances on the first portion of the exam that should have been marked correct. I found the class very interesting, and I was actively engaged in classroom discussions and went to office hours for clarification and help in the course. My participation mark represented this as I was awarded an A-. It is also worth noting that a re-grade is worth while as my mark on the essay was much more reflective of my ability and understanding than my exam mark. I strongly feel that the reason behind my exam mark is the result of inadequate marking. Upon looking at my performance in POLS 243 throughout the semester it is clear that there is a discrepancy between the mark I received on the exam and the other marks I have gotten during the term.
I studied very extensively for this exam, by reading over all the readings and lectures. The essay portion of my exam reflects this, as I discuss specific theorists, their theories and how these theories were relevant to the question being asked. I also was in contact with my TA, Akif Hasni prior to the exam to discuss tips on formatting and writing the exam.

I have emailed both Akif, and the class instructor, Professor McGarry to see if it is possible for either of them to look over and possibly re-grade my exam. Unfortunately, neither of them are in Kingston. I am fairly confident a re-grade will boost my mark, and provide me with a mark that accurately depicts my performance in the course.
