Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Associate Dean of Studies,

I am formally appealing to late drop Economics 255 taken in the Fall semester of 2016.

In December of that year, just prior to writing the final examination, I sustained a concussion preventing me from writing the exam for this class and, at the time, agreed to re- write the final examination in April during the Winter 2017 exam period. That said, my concussion symptoms persisted into the Winter and I did not attempt any Econ255 coursework until late in the current semester.

I am appealing to drop on three grounds:

1. As an A student, I believe that taking this examination in April will be unrepresentative of my true ability to complete and succeed in the course given my concussion symptoms and how long it has been since I took the class. Please understand that this is a complicated Mathematics class that requires hours of practice and concentration.

2. Since the first semester, the professor has changed and the course work is varied. Although the syllabus for the class states that the material is the same, different notation is used and ultimately the testing will not be the same. I believe for this reason that writing the exam under these circumstances would be an unreasonable expectation.

3. As a student admitted to law school, this course is not compulsory to the completion of my three-year degree. Instead of completing this class in the Winter Exam period I will simply take a class in the summer to complete my degree before moving on to bigger and better things

While I understand that academic integrity is of the utmost importance, I believe that, given the circumstances, this is an acceptable request. My past academic standing thus far
shows clearly my ability to complete this course successfully under normal circumstances however I believe that the issues raised above require some discretion.

Thanks in advance,
Brendan Kennedy
