Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To: The Associate Dean (Studies)

I am appealing to request an extension of my Incomplete for Statistics 263.

For the past six months, I have been experiencing a strenuous psychological challenge involving anxiety and depression. I have been seeing both a therapist and a psychiatrist in this regard. I realized in November that my medical issues and medications were interfering with my ability to retain information from class, with a tutor or independently. This was most obvious in Statistics, a course that requires my full attention and devotion. In the months leading up to the original December exam date, my ability to focus on school as a whole was tremendously difficult. When the anxiety and depression became so severe that I could no longer attend class or tutoring sessions, my academic performance dwindled even more. Recognizing this, I deferred the exam in December, and was admitted to The Homewood Health Center where I invested two months in understanding and learning strategies to deal with my mental health. When I left Homewood, it had been over three months since I had been studying material actively for the course and what I had learned needed to be re- learned. When discharged in February, my focus was and still is on furthering my recovery based on what I learned while in hospital. It was advised that I not return to studies for the winter semester but focus on my recovery. My initial intent to focus on writing this exam in April has proven unreasonable and I am not well enough to prepare for the exam in the time I have.

My mental health is very important to me. I understand now that I tried to jump back into school too quickly. Having a few additional months to re-acclimate, meet with my health care professionals, establish a routine with a tutor once again, and re-learn the material so that I may write the exam at a later date are important for me to be successful. Working with my academic advisor and accessibility services more closely in the future will be important. Accessing the support I need before the issues become overwhelming will be a vital part of my future studies as well. It is critical that I start back into school gradually and on a positive note. I recognize that to attempt to prepare for this exam in April will be detrimental to my mental health and my academic future.
Thank you for your time and for your compassion.

Regards,
Dan Manning
