Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to request the dropping of three courses after the deadline. The courses I wish to drop are DEVS 240, DEVS 311, and LLCU 244.

Since the end of last semester, I have been having a hard time leaving my room and when exam time came I felt overwhelmed and out of place. After December break it got even worse and I found it difficult to sleep or get out of the house. School became extremely difficult to manage and I felt extremely lost. I thought that continuing school was the right thing, even if I felt as though I could not do it. School has become totally overwhelming and I have lost all motivation to continue.

I kept avoiding the deteriorating situation because the thought of having to face classes and other people made me anxious. I have had a hard time making friends, which has made it even more difficult to get myself going. I struggle with everyday things and with making decisions, which made me unable to face the fact that I could no longer go to school. I was trying to deal with everything on my own and I felt ashamed to tell anyone that I was struggling with everything.

Only a month or so after the beginning of second semester I could not get myself to do any work or get to sleep. I was sleeping a few hours each night and I was not eating well. It has become totally overwhelming and I have done what I can to maintain it but I finally realized that I cannot continue studying. However, it took me a very long time to realize this and it was only after talking to some relatives that had been through a similar situation. I felt like the only answer was to continue and finish this year even though I have been very depressed. This meant that unfinished work continued to pile up and I thought there would be no way out.

After feeling depressed for so long, I finally worked up the courage to go and see a counsellor and an academic advisor, which is how I concluded that the best thing for me is to no longer continue my studies. Going to see a counsellor helped me see clearly and I realized that I am not in a mental state that will allow me to function in University. I would one day like to come back and study something that I can thrive in. Now is not that time and I realized I need to take some time to figure out a way forward.

Sincerely,

Lorena Zapata Bedoya
