Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Bénard Associate Dean (Studies),
Request ¿¿ I am appealing my STAT 263 grade from the Fall 2016 semester in hopes of achieving a credit standing on my transcript.
Explanation ¿¿ Throughout last semester during my statistics course, I enjoyed the material and kept up to date with homework and quizzes on a weekly basis. The morning of the statistics exam, I suffered from an allergic reaction from the previous nights¿¿ dinner. Just some background information that I had to hospitalized last year due to having a severe reaction from also consuming a shellfish product. In lieu of not having proper documentation to support either of these severe reactions, and not seeking medical attention before or immediately after the exam, I¿¿ve provided the self-declaration form. I did not want to miss the opportunity to take the exam as I had studied a fair amount and was well prepared. Due to my lack of experience in this specific circumstance, I knew I had to find the strength to walk to campus to take the exam regardless of how badly I was feeling. While writing the examination, I could hardly process the questions properly with so much physical distress. I completed the exam in the maximum allotted time frame and tried to work through the problems while avoiding the immense pain. I strongly believe that due to my illness, my academic performance was below what I would have normally scored on the examination. Immediately following the exam, I walked to Jeffrey Hall to speak with my professor, Dr. Charles Molson. I discussed my stressful morning with him, and he noticed that I appeared ill. My professor went on to advise me that, in retrospect, I should have stayed home and missed the exam. On December 15th (the day after the exam), I followed up speaking with my professor by sending him an email, which is attached on file. Upon eating the shellfish product, I did not experience any particular effect immediately following ingestion. The painful symptoms arose when I woke up the following morning, and were evident for approximately 12 hours. Following the statistics exam, I had 2 examinations the next 2 days which I was determined to not have this scenario repeat itself. Thankfully, after dinner the day of my statistics exam, I felt much better and was able to not let the extenuating circumstance hinder the studying of my other exams.
Future plan ¿¿ For my future endeavors, I will take multiple pre-cautions to better prepare myself for each and every examination. In the aspect of nutrition, I should stick to foods that I know won¿¿t make me feel ill, and are a good source of nutrients. I have high expectations for myself, and am extremely goal oriented. This hurdle in my academic regime is simply a learning step that I will take and use it to my advantage. Now that I am aware of the proper steps to take when feeling nauseous during an examination day, I will execute the appropriate protocol. I hope for your consideration during this important matter, and I want to thank you for this admirable opportunity.
Thank you for your consideration,
Marshall
