Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To Dr. Johanne Bénard,
Associate Dean (Studies)
I am appealing to drop both GPHY 240 and GPHY 250 (Winter 2017).
The reason I am appealing to drop these courses is due to an extenuating psychological challenge I have been facing for upwards of 2 years. Going back to last year, I came into university facing this challenge. I immediately sought the help of both counsellors and doctors on campus and they did an amazing job of looking after me and made dealing with this challenge much easier for me. After my first year, going into the summer, I spent a considerable amount of time using the self-care methods and strategies they provided to me, which proved to be quite beneficial to my overall health. Coming into second year I was nervous, yet confident that I could make it through, and that proved to be the case for the fall term of 2016. My grades were where I know they could be and I was extremely proud of myself for having come such a long way. It was however in this winter term of 2017 where things started to get quite difficult again for me. My mood disorder began to consume my life which severely inhibited my academic performance. Currently I am transitioning between medications to find a better fit for my condition which has also lead to some setbacks.
The reason why I am only dropping these courses and not the remaining ones is mainly because they are both half year courses while HIST 122, PSYC 100 and PROF 210 are full year. Another reason why I am dropping these courses is because it is now too late to catch up to be able to pull through with a passing grade in either course with the way they are set up. I have not handed in any assignments in GPHY 250 and only one assignment in GPHY 240 which was only worth a total of 5 of the overall grade.
I attempted to take on a full course load this year as I thought I was capable, however it unfortunately did not work out the way I wanted it to. I have worked with my academic advisor to set me up with a 5-year undergraduate plan that will have a reduced course load for the next 3 years, while simultaneously taking summer courses to meet my graduation requirements in that time frame. This ensures that my courses will not overwhelm me during future academic years and that I will be able to give myself time to look after my situation. By allowing me to drop these courses, you will be enabling me to put more focus into my remaining courses and pass this semester. Moving forward, I will continue to see both my doctor who has followed my situation since arriving here, as well as a counsellor to help guide me through this difficult time.
Thank you for taking the time to read my appeal and I hope you consider my circumstance.
