Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To Associate Dean (Studies):
I write this letter of appeal to you requesting to receive an Aegrotat standing in DEVS 240 (Winter 2017) and a Credit standing in POLS 385 (Winter 2017).
Being a part of an institution such as Queen¿¿s has led me to become a mature individual with a greater sense of purpose. The opportunities presented to me daily inspire me to be the best academic and citizen I can be. Yet I am currently amidst a situation where I take full responsibility of everything that was in my control, and all that was not. Hopefully this letter explains the circumstances in which I have exhausted all options, and I am inflicted to ask you to consider my appeal.
The extenuating circumstances beyond my control began towards the end of March 2017. Both my maternal grandparents passed away within a couple weeks of one another. This in itself was difficult to deal with. I was emotionally, mentally and physically drained. I suffered with depression as I have no support system or healthy coping mechanism to deal with grief. Nevertheless, I refused to abandon my studies, and persisted forcefully. My mother who battles her own mental health struggles is doing worse than I am. I have to travel to and from my home in Toronto on a weekly basis for the past couple weeks to care for her as I am an only child to full-time employed immigrant parents, leading to missed classes and assignments. My mom has taken a leave of absence from work, and her health has deteriorated drastically. She is not stable, and I have an obligation as well as want to be with her during this emergency. My familial difficulties, paired with my own issues have made school an unsafe space and an environment filled with anxiety, insecurity, and exhaustion. I need to be with my family, especially my mother as she transitions and adapts to a new lifestyle within the upcoming weeks. I also need time to mourn without penalty for the sake of my own psychological wellness.
I have sought help from a counsellor through the Student Wellness Services, and have arranged regular appointments. I reached out to Academic Advising, together we planned out my future, and they encouraged me to file this appeal. I have two exams scheduled, DEVS 240 and POLS 385. I have done extremely well in my other courses and have reached out to those professors to confirm that I will be all right. Those are specifically FILM 303, an online course with no exam hence its accessibility during my time away from Kingston and DEVS 305 which has no exam and ended in early March until we depart for Cuba in May. As I will be going away for DEVS 305 and cannot afford to not participate in the opportunity; finance, dedication, and family encouragement wise, I really want to spend April mending my family and myself. My professors are all aware of my circumstance and are cooperative in ensuring I receive the vital aid I require.
I hope that I do not suffer academically because of the position my life is currently stationed at, and I want it to be aware that I will work as hard as I can to lift myself in an optimistic and proactive manner. This case is completely rare and singular for me. I am a good student who has been handed bad timing. I hope you will consider my appeal, and understand where I am coming from.
Warmest Regards,
Zelia Bukhari

New Information: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to you today to inform you that the worsening of my familial situation has led me to come to the decision that dropping POLS385 may be a more responsible choice than requesting a Credit Standing. As stated in my letter and in my documentation, my mother has been battling her mental health issues for a while but even more so after my grandparents passed earlier this semester. Because of this I have not been able to perform well in POLS385 as it requires stata a program only available without charge on Campus, as well as regular attendance of the course to understand the content. I got a tutor, I tried extremely hard, but there is just too much for me to catch up on before the exam. As I have been away caring for my mother during this terrible time for my family, and as she along with the rest of my family are my priority at the moment, I humbly request the ability to drop this course as I can hopefully take it next year properly and do my very best at it and get a grade on my transcript. After much deliberation, this seems to me as the best step, as I am not certain I will pass the course. My apologies for the late notice, but I really wanted to try and succeed in the course before I came to this extreme decision. I just want to learn the course to its full extent next year, and actually benefit from it. Please try to understand where I am coming from. I plan on keeping a tutor into next year, and I have multiple counselling sessions with Student Wellness planned for this upcoming week to help sort through everything during this trying time. Thank you so much.
Best,
Zelia Bukhari
