Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing you to appeal for Aegrotat Standing for my German 101 (Winter 2017) course. My healing process after a traumatic incidence of sexual assault has deeply affected my ability to focus and dedicate energy to my coursework. Using just a few examples, I hope to paint a picture for you to convey the intensity with which my ability to study has been affected.
When being called on to answer questions in my German 101 class, I often find my hands moving nervously to my neck. When this happens I frequently experience a sensation that my hands no longer belong to me, and that someone else is trying to choke me. Furthermore, while studying for this exam in a building with construction next door, the high-pitched noise of the drills sound like screams in my ears. I am shaken and unable to concentrate when this happens. Also, I recently had to get blood work done for some medical problems I am dealing with. The experience generated severe anxiety due to the procedural similarities when compared to the post-rape testing for diseases that I went through. Maintaining composure at the library was not possible after this appointment. Similarly, days when I visit my therapist, which I do one day of every week, are days I am incapable of doing course work. I spend my time sleeping after we meet, for it is the only way I am able to stop flash backs from appearing in my mind.
I am appealing for Aegrotat Standing for this class specifically due to the type of course work it requires. I am enrolled in two other courses. They are both formatted in ways familiar to me and with content that builds on my DEVS major knowledge foundation. I have been able to achieve passing grades with less input on my own time due to my existing knowledge and familiarity of content. In contrast, my German class requires greater focus and much more time outside of class. As explained above, my productivity is low. Every day I work to apply myself, but I run into mental obstacles along the way that drain me of my energy. My thinking is cloudy and memorization of new vocabulary is difficult. It is with great frustration that I inform you about the incredible trouble I am having in finding energy, space, and mental clarity to learn this language.
As a student in my final year of studies, the future plan I can present to you is one of healing. I will continue my therapy sessions and work to find my process of recovery.
I am so thankful for my time at this institution. Previous to my incident of assault, I had a reputation for being a student who takes great pleasure in her studies. I am not one to work with low standards, and I am not one to ask for accommodations unless they are strongly required.
I appreciate your consideration and wish you all the best.
