RE: Appeal for Aegrotat Standing in CHEM 222 and MICR 270, and an extension of the Incomplete grade I currently hold in PSYC 100A/B.
My name is Kyle Scoten, and I am a third-year Arts and Science student majoring in Life Science. In April 2016, I suffered a severe concussion. Consequently, I was unable to study for and write my five Winter 2016 final exams. I was forced to appeal for Aegrotat Standing and deferrals for my exams. I was granted Aegrotat Standing in two courses, CHEM 223 and BCHM 218. For the remaining courses, CHEM 222, MICR 270, and PSYC 100A/B, I was granted a deferral of my final exams until April 2016.
Unfortunately, I was not able to return to Queen's University for the 2016/2017 school year and am still unable to write the CHEM 222, MICR 270, and PSYC 100A/B exams due to the debilitating symptoms that I still experience one year after the injury. These include persistent headaches of a 7/10 severity, depression (due to my lingering headaches), difficulty concentrating for more than 15 minutes at a time, and sleep challenges. Furthermore, these symptoms are greatly exaggerated by the stress I feel having not yet completed my second year courses. I am an extremely conscientious student and performing well academically is of the utmost importance to me. I am very worried that the tremendous effort that I put into these three courses during the entire Winter 2016 semester will be discounted if I am not able to receive a grade in these courses.
My post-concussion symptoms persist despite extensive physiotherapy (eye-tracking exercises, etc.), massage therapy (to loosen muscles in my neck), chiropractic therapies, acupuncture, natural medicines, frequent visits to my family doctor (Dr. Levitt), and enrolment in the GF Strong Post-Concussion Syndrome Rehabilitation Program in Vancouver. These many doctors had previously assured me that I would be better within one year of the injury. However, that date has now passed and I have seen no improvements in my condition whatsoever. Therefore, it is impossible to say when I will be able to return to school; this further contributes to the stress that I feel.
Though I understand that the Associate Dean's Office does not typically grant Aegrotat Standing to students who have not completed 60 of the course, I hope that my dedication to academics (as evidenced by my transcript), unusually persistent symptoms, and lack of a recovery timeline persuade you to consider an exception to this rule. As a result, this letter is to appeal for Aegrotat Standing in CHEM 222 and MICR 270. I have completed 50 of both courses and hope that I have demonstrated my understanding of course material through my exceptional performance in the course work that I have completed. However, should this not be a possibility, I must also request an of the Incomplete grade that I currently hold in CHEM 222 and MICR 270 until September 2017.
I have also emailed the professor and course coordinator for PSYC 100A/B. Despite having completed 60 of the course, they explained that under no circumstances will they support a student in appealing for Aegrotat Standing. Further, a year-long deferral is normally the maximum granted by PSYC 100. However, after speaking with the Department of Psychology, they were understanding of my situation and agreed to support me in an appeal for a further deferral of my PSYC 100A/B exam until September 2017 and an extension of my Incomplete grade. As a result, this letter is also to appeal for an extension of the Incomplete grade that I currently hold in PSYC 100A/B until September 2017.
Thank you very much for your thoughtful consideration of my appeal for Aegrotat Standing in CHEM 222 and MICR 270, and for an extension of the Incomplete grade that I currently hold in PSYC 100A/B. I hope that you understand that my extenuating circumstances have directly affected my ability to complete my final examinations for the Winter 2016 semester as scheduled, and that the stress invoked by my incomplete courses is highly detrimental to my recovery. They are understanding of my unusual circumstances, and are therefore willing to grant me a grade in their courses despite having only completed 50 of the course assessments.
