Dear Sir/Madam,
I am appealing to drop STAT 263. I have tried to the best of my ability to complete the course and exam. I am not pursuing a degree with Queens, I was registered as an interested student to take a couple of courses, there are two courses I am enrolled in to take but as of right now I am unsure if I will continue through Queens due to my experiences to date. I am appealing to drop STAT 263 from my grades/academic report due to my current mental health.

I work a full-time job and did not think I would have had the stress I have through Queens Distance Studies. I have been seeing a professional for this since October of last year. The reason I began to see a professional was due to my increased stress levels and anxiety; a lot of which was has been caused by some terrible experiences in my online learning through Queens. Online learning should not be as difficult or stressful as my experience has been. I spoke with David Youssef, on a number of occasions to express the level of difficulty I was having with Queens Distance Studies. I have completed a degree previously and in those 4 years I did not have to seek professional help to deal with any of my courses. I could not psychologically cope with the stress levels of this class, STAT 263, including the work and the professor. I found it to be extremely difficult to understand what he was saying and follow along to any of his lectures. I would at times attempt one question for over 3 hours following specifically what he said in his lecture and the text book, but somehow I could never get to the answer he had. There were also questions done that would have an answer one way this day and another answer on a different day. There was no consistency. Even after having a tutor help me, they themselves could not understand what was being asked. I felt even more stress and anxiety. It has caused me physical as well as mental barriers since the course began. The stress and anxiety I have developed from this has not only been detrimental to my mental health but also to my job and personal relationships.

As mentioned above I have been seeing a professional for these issues and will continue to do so until such time I am in a comfortable place to move forward, there is no end date as of today. I would like to attempt the course again in the future and plan to do so. It has been suggested to me that I plan to take one course at a time while I maintain full-time employment and begin to reduce my anxiety and work on my mental health. I ask that you please have this course dropped from my transcript such that I do not face an academic penalty.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you,

Laura Siydock
