Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop CISC 260 (Winter 2017), CISC 204 (Fall 2016), and receive a credit standing in CISC 220 (Fall 2016).
I was diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety when I was 15, and I had a really effective system of support before I moved from the U.S to Canada for university. After coming to Queen¿¿s, I saw a psychiatrist and a few counselors at LaSalle, but was still unable to receive appropriate help suited to my needs. I saw Dr. Kenney at LaSalle from November 2015-September 2016 before I switched to seeing another psychiatrist at LaSalle who also was not the proper fit for me. As an international student, it¿¿s extremely expensive for me to seek help outside of what is covered by UHIP, so I really pushed to try to find help within the Queen¿¿s community.
In second semester of my first year, I was sexually assaulted by a non-Queen¿¿s student while in Kingston. I felt as if I couldn¿¿t turn to anyone for weeks, and when I finally built up the courage to meet with a counselor in LaSalle, she told me it was my fault because I ¿¿wasn¿¿t careful enough¿. With lack of support from all ends, I felt extremely hopeless. My friend encouraged me to report the assault to the Kingston police last summer, who came to me at the end of January and told me they didn¿¿t have enough evidence to press charges. With the combination of my mental illness and the stress and hopelessness of the report process, I didn¿¿t have the proper energy to put into my schoolwork.
I met with an academic advisor a few days ago, who helped me come up with a plan to get my academic career back on track. I am appealing to drop CISC 260 and CISC 204, and will retake these courses next school year along with receiving a credit standing in CISC 220. I also plan to take a few courses this summer to allow me to split up my course load for next year so I can balance schoolwork with recovery. I have been urging my mother to allow me to seek help outside of Queen¿¿s, and we are discussing finding a doctor within the Kingston community.
If any necessary documentation is required, the academic advisor I saw has record of the signed letter that Dr. Kenney wrote for Dr. David Lamb of the School of Computing. If anything else is needed, I can obtain it from LaSalle.
