Dear Associate Dean (studies),
My name is Zoe Wall, student number 10187660, and I am appealing to drop the following courses: MATH 221 and STAT 268 (Fall, 2016).
This year, my anxiety disorder has directly influenced my academic performance. I¿¿ve struggled with anxiety disorder my entire life, but up until recently, it has only mainly affected me socially. More specifically, I have always been fearful and anxious of being evaluated and negatively judged by others in social situations. As a result, I missed a lot of school in high school, as well as I avoided a lot of social gatherings with friends. Moving away from home for school has proven to help me cope a lot with my social anxiety, but my anxiety has now begun to hinder my academic performance as well. It affects my ability to focus, thus affecting my preparation for tests and exams, as well as my completion of assignments. My social anxiety also affects my ability to attend class. It is extremely frustrating because I love my program and I am very interested in my courses, but my anxiety prevents me from preforming to the best of my abilities. I have found that once I am finally able to focus and study, I understand a majority of the material, but it is often too late as I have usually missed key lessons presented in class or I have not given myself enough time to learn all of the material for the upcoming test, exams, etc. In order to deal with my anxiety, I began seeing a doctor at Health Services in November of 2016. Since then, I have been trying different doses of anxiety medication. The medications I have tried up until this point have given me very bad side effects, such as an irregular sleeping schedule. This has only further negatively influenced my academic performance.
This summer, I will be meeting with my family doctor to find a medication that effectively helps me cope with my anxiety, without presenting me with negative side effects. In order to succeed in my future studies, I will begin to meet with a personal counselor once a week throughout the entirety of the school year. With a personal counselor¿¿s help this summer, I will create a daily routine that will help encourage me to attend class and manage my time properly in order to complete my school work. I now realize the severity of my anxiety and how negatively it is affecting my grades at school. I am extremely motivated to take control of my anxiety disorder and work hard to obtain the grades I know I deserve.
Sincerely,
Zoe Wall
