Petition Letter: Hello,
This is an appeal for credit standing in PHGY 214.
In the first term, my performance on the December exam was hindered due to mental health issues. I had an anxiety disorder, but was not diagnosed until I was admitted to the hospital and required medical help in second semester. It was not until midway last semester that the medication I was given was in full effect.
Essentially, I needed to do well on the April exam because the way the weighting of the exams in this course is set up really hurt my grade going into second semester. I was prepared to do well on this exam, especially because my medication significantly aided my mental health. During the April examination a fire alarm went off and caused my exam to be cut short. Many questions were left unanswered and I was unable to go over my exam. I feel as though I am at a significant disadvantage due to this exam situation because I hadn't filled in a good amount of questions which I did not mark on the exam page, and I was still going over other answers which I was about to change.
My performance was hindered on the multiple choice components of the course, but I excelled on the long answer components. I averaged an A or A- for those parts. In my other classes and as for this year, my grades are fine- either average or well above average. Getting a C- in this course is really disheartening considering I studied very much and know a lot more of the material than is demonstrated.
In summary, the first issue is that my performance was significantly higher on the short answer exams compared to the multiple choice exams, which is arguably a better reflection of one's knowledge. Also, my performance was negatively impacted by mental health issues earlier in the course. Finally, the sudden shortening of the final exam negatively impacted my performance which led to an incomplete exam. All of the stated circumstances are well beyond my control, and I have contacted my professor who is aware of my circumstances.
I hope you can recognize the battle I have dealt with, as it has not been an easy one. My grade in the course will poorly represent my knowledge in the course, and will significantly drop my GPA from where I have worked so hard to bring it today. I certainly have gained a lot more knowledge in this course than the letter on my transcript will show as a result of these concerns.
