Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern,
My name is Ellen Deegan. I was an exchange student in Queen¿¿s University for the winter term of 2017. I would like to review the instructors¿¿ grading of my final exam for the module MATH341, Differential Geometry. I contacted Mr. Barthelme via email with regards to my final grade and he suggested that I speak to the Undergraduate Chair of Mathematics, Dr. C. Devon Lin. I have since decided to go through the appeals process.
I received 53 for the final exam; however, I failed the module as a result of my struggles with the midterm and weekly assignments. The module breakdown was 60 for the final exam, 10 for the weekly assignments and 30 for the midterm. My midterm grade was 40 and my assignment grade was 41. My overall grade is 47.
I found that the workload was heavier than the module description suggested. I spent many hours each week trying to keep up with the class work before even attempting the assignments. I often could not find the time to complete the required amount of work as it took from my other modules, despite the amount of independent study I was putting into differential geometry. In my home university, I have never used a textbook to follow coursework so closely nor have I had such long weekly assignments. These assignments took a total of about 10 hours a week for me to complete. They were worth 1 each. I believe the reason I struggled with this module so much was the lack of experience I had learning in such a way, and having to learn so differently in a very challenging third year course. In saying this, I never expected to fail the module and I put all the work I could into the final exam.
Majority of my two reading weeks before the exam were spent studying very hard for Differential Geometry. I believe that the amount of hard work I put into the final exam is not reflected in the 53 that I received and I hope that you find the exam satisfactory enough to bring my grade to a pass.
