Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To the Associate Deans (Studies),
I am appealing to drop MATH 121 (Fall, 2015-Winter, 2016) and CISC102 (Fall, 2015) from my transcript.
I entered my first year of university in the fall of 2015 under the assumption that I wanted to further my education by getting my undergraduate degree in Computer Science. After my first semester at Queen's my financial situation at home started to suffer. I am an international student from Costa Rica and for my family to send me to this school has been an enormous sacrifice and it is still an enormous sacrifice to this day. My family has struggled to pay my tuition every semester, and as you can see on my proof of payment, I still owe money to the university. Finding this out halfway through my first year and having to carry the burden of it put a huge amount of stress on my academic performance. Mainly because it left me with very little funds to survive outside the university. Towards the end of first semester, a family member back home started to experience health issues that required them to be hospitalize and this carried out all the way until the end of my first year at Queen's which amounted to the stress I was under. After all of this is when I realized that I did not want to further my education in Computer Science. Not only was I unhappy with my personal life; my academic life had also become very unfulfilling to me. I became aware that I disliked most of my courses and was doing poorly in some of them because of it. I came to the conlcusion that it had been a mistake to have chosen Computer Science.
Adjusting to life in a completely different country was extremely hard for me. I was very uncomofortable with my situation as well as being in a new place. This is why I did not seek help further than a couple academic advising appointments and thatis where I went wrong. I recognize that now because I see why that is not an excuse not to get help.
After my first year my mental health started to deteriorate and since then I have been seeing a counsellor provided by the Queen's Student Wellness Center. I have since decided to switch my major into Geography and Planning and have been taking courses that apply to that major. For now, I am undeclared but come May, I will declare that as my major. I have realized that choosing Computer Science as my major was a mistake because it was not the major for me and I am making it up now with the courses I am taking by getting approximately B's in most of my courses.
The next steps I plan to take are firstly, to change my degree plan from Computer Science into Geography. By the time you review this letter I will have taken that step already. Next, I will continue to see a counsellor until my mental health improves. I am currently working and am planning to get a part time job during the school year to help out my financial situation. Lastly, I have planned to take a 5th year of schooling at Queen's in order to take a lighter course load as well as catch up with courses that I have missed since hopefully switching my degree plan. The money owed to the university as my family is now more financially stable and I will be applying to get a credit loan come fall.
All things considered, I will trust any decisions you choose to take given my situation. Thank you for taking your time to read my appeal.
