Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (studies),

My name is Hibah Kolur and I am currently a first year student enrolled in the BHSc program. I am writing to appeal for a late add into the online summer courses for MATH 121 and CHEM 113. Due to prolonged family issues as well as technological issues within my household, I was unable to register for the course before the deadline.

Family problems did not allow me to enroll for the course as I was unsure if I would be absolutely needing summer school as I had not received my final grades, which now indicate that I have failed the courses. I was expecting to have done well on my exams, as I had put a lot of efforts into them, thus did not actively pursue summer school. I did not anticipate failing. Problems within my household required me to only be taking summer school if I had failed my courses, as is now the case.

Prior to summer classes commencing I did attempt to enroll myself into the course as a precaution but was unable to complete the process due to the internet at my home verifiably cutting contact. This issue (with the internet) caused me to be out of wifi for around 2 weeks. As a result, I was unable to enroll myself in the summer courses. It is only recently that we were able to fix this issue, after calling in multiple technicians.

I am afraid the failure of these courses will heavily impact my academic goals for the upcoming years and thus kindly requesting to be able to enroll in these summer courses to avoid further damage to my university career.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. Please contact me by email or phone if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Hibah Kolur

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I understand that I have missed 2 weeks' worth of classes within the summer term, but I plan to put all my efforts possible to catch up, should my appeal be granted. This will be done by actively prioritizing my summer school work load over anything else. Academic success in these courses is a must for me, which I will achieve by putting all my focus towards these courses, regardless of domestic or technological issues. The technological issues have been solved within my household until further notice.

I had planned to take lifesci as my major for second year, but due to failing math and chemistry, will be unlikely to do so. As a result, I was hoping to be able to complete these courses in summer school and continue taking second year courses next year and be able to switch into a major, complete the BHSc program and enter medical school. Should this appeal not be granted, I will be required to take these courses during the fall and winter terms next year, thus placing me behind in my academic goals. This will prevent me from taking second year chemistry and math courses that I would require to not only be able to catch up to my peers but also to switch into a major.

I am a hardworking and diligent student with previous academic success, it has been heartbreaking to understand that I've failed 2 subjects this past school year. The failure of these two subjects has motivated me to do the best possible in ensuring this does not occur again. I would like for this appeal to be granted to have a chance to display my academic success, with minimal damage to my academic goals.
