Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing my COGS 201 course because I believe that even though I met the prerequisite requirements for the course, I felt that what was taught the PSYC 100 course was not enough to be at a level where I had enough preexisting knowledge on the subject to able to understand the material of the course. I understand that there was a drop period for the course, but I had only received approximately 25 percent of my grade in the course by that date, which was not enough to gage how well the course was going. In the COGS 201 class the COGS 100 course was often brought up in discussion with the professor referring to what was learned in the COGS 100 course and how COGS 201 builds on that. I did not take the COGS 100 course so I did not receive the base level knowledge from that course that COGS 201 was building on. Going into this course the only course prerequisite I had taken was PSYC 100 and I had no programming or computer science experience, it was definitely a shock when I had to do coding in the course. When I read the course description on the Queen's University School of Computing website no where did it state that programming was a huge requirement of the class. Knowing my skill level in computers I would have not considered this course knowing that it was so heavily based on knowing how to code in a computer. Please consider letting me appeal this course due to my circumstances. If appealing this grade is not an option I wondered if I would be able to late apply the Personal Interest Credit to this class because this class is not a requirement for my program. It is very important to me that this grade does not affect my GPA.
