Petition Letter: Dr. Johanne Bernard June 9th, 2017
Associate Dean (Studies)
Faculty of Arts and Science
Dunning Hall
Queen's University
Dear Dr. Bernard,
I am responding to the email notification that I received on May 23, 2017, advising me that I need to withdraw from my undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science, for a one year period, due to my academic standing.
Since receipt of the notice, I have done a great deal of personal reflection and spoken at length with my family, a university academic advisor and my family physician to assist me in processing my reflections, insights and options. I am respectfully submitting an appeal to the faculty to have this regulation waived, and to obtain permission to return to Queen's University as a full-time student this fall 2017. In addition, I am appealing to request credit standing in the following four courses: COMM 200, COMM 221, MATH 126 and ECON 222.
I believe that my mental health has negatively impacted my academic performance. I have suffered from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic since 2015 and have sought help from my family physician as well as a phycologist. I have also attempted to manage this disorder using cognitive behavioural therapy. I now recognize that the extent of my anxiety has negatively impacted my ability to focus my study efforts, concentrate on course content, my time management and productivity, as well as exam preparation. I have attached medical documentation confirming this diagnosis.
Preparing for this appeal process has reaffirmed for me what a privilege it is to be a student member in the academic community at Queen's University and how much I value this. I am highly motivated to return this fall and demonstrate my ability to succeed. Being a Queen's student is a tremendous part of my self-identity and factors significantly in both my current and future aspirations.
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this appeal process and for giving me a second chance at success.
Sincerely,
Connor Timmings

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: My academic plan consists of five critical elements; I am implementing a new medical management plan for my anxiety and panic disorder and have started on a new medication regime in combination with cognitive behavioural therapy. Together with my family physician, I will be closely monitoring the positive impact of the medication on my anxiety levels and will continue to do so throughout the upcoming school year. A second part of my plan is to change my major from BA Economics to BAH in Philosophy, Politics and Economics with a specialization in Politics (PPEC). I have experienced significant challenges with the mathematics portion involved in Economics specifically in courses such as ECON 222 and MATH 126. I have consulted with an academic advisor within the Faculty of Arts and Science and am excited to have mapped out a course plan. With this plan, I would complete the Economics portion of PPEC with course selection that is more aligned with my learning strengths and abilities. These include ECON 225, ECON 231, ECON 232, and ECON 251. Furthermore, I am also prepared to repeat POLS 110 if required to secure my placement in this new program.
Thirdly, I will be accessing student academic success services more in order to improve my time management, essay writing skills and approaches to exam preparation. The fourth component of my plan relates to my housing arrangements. Last year I was living with 6 other people and found that environment was not conducive to strong study habits and obtaining proper rest. This fall I will be living with just one roommate in a housing unit closer to campus. Finally, this summer I am enrolled in an online course, RELS 131. As part of this I am also piloting a time management app that is called Focus @ Will, which has already helped me with both concentration and productivity.
