Petition Letter: Request to Appeal Grades
Dear Dr. Johanne Benard,
I am emailing you today regarding an appeal I would like to make towards the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I would like to appeal to have the marks for HEBR 190A , CISC 101, CISC 121 and MATH 121B dropped from my academic transcript, and to have MATH 111B and MUSC 104 changed to credit standing or ¿¿CR¿ on my academic transcript as well.

I have had extenuating circumstances beyond my control that have fallen upon me all my academic life, and this year, it was the worst I have ever seen it. I struggled with chronic anxiety with regards to all my exams throughout high school, and now in university, first and second semester. This greatly affects my academic performance because during the school year I get good marks in my classes when I complete tests or assignments. I then enter an exam worth over 50 (for example CISC-101) with over an 80 average in the course, and because of my chronic anxiety I failed the exam, thus failing the course. My marks on all my exams are not the true reflection of my knowledge regarding the class content. When I take an exam, especially one that has a pass or fail designation, I get very panicked and nervous. My mind goes blank and I forget everything I was just studying, and in this panicked state of anxiety, I often have trouble reading questions and I can no longer focus on the questions I am doing. On top of this, I have had a learning disability all my life, and I have accommodations set in place at through Student Wellness Services. I did not receive the help I needed to be successful this year and not help me out and I feel that after a certain point in the year, the accessibility staff stopped showing interest in trying to help me with my exam induced anxiety. I had only one professor in CISC 101 and CISC 121 who actively tried to help me with my issues, and even approached me saying that my exam marks and my assignment marks did not match up. She then gave me sort of an oral examination as a test, and confirmed I did know the course content, and that she was not sure why I would do well on assignments, but then do poorly on exams. In addition to all of these problems, I got an email saying that I had to go on Academic Withdrawal because my GPA was below 0.70. After some research, my professor from CISC 102 informed me that there was an error on my final exam, and that my mark would be changed from an F to a D, ensuring that my GPA would be about the 0.70 required to not go on academic withdrawal. After all of these events, more than anything I just wanted a fresh start. This would all mean that next year I would essentially be repeating first year and while this is drastic, there is nothing more that I could ask for than to be able to fix my mistakes.
