Dear Associate Dean of Studies,

I would like to appeal to the faculty of Arts and Science to waive their decision to withdraw for one year due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control. During the course of the year I have been suffering from stress, anxiety and depression. Due to these mental health issues, this has affected my overall grade performance. In the beginning of the year, my study was pre-occupied with worries, fear of being embarrassed or getting something wrong, and the fear to interact with others. As a result making it difficult to start and complete an assignment, answering questions confidently during a term test, and seeking help from professors or teaching assistants when I am having difficulty. During this time, depression also took a huge toll on my mind and as a result on my education too. This affected my performance by having a hard time recalling information I have studied for tests and exams, making it hard to concentrate and focus during lectures, and becoming overwhelmed with the course load and deadlines. During this time I did not seek for help because of the lack of insight, limited awareness and feeling inadequate. I was worried of being labeled as mentally ill by my parents and peers if I was to seek for help from a medical professional or even a counsellor. Also, not addressing the issue that I am sick and believing that I can handle this on my own made it even worse. The reason I did not seek a medical professional or counsellor was because of fear of admitting something is wrong with my mental health and feeling weak and inferior to everyone around me.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: This time, I plan to take full initiative of my mental health by working with a medical professional, seeing a psychiatrist, taking prescription medication and seeking academic advice from academic advisors in order to become successful in my studies. My academic plans includes to take a lighter course load, retaking courses especially prerequisite courses, planning regular consultation with professors and teaching assistants and seeking assistance from student academic success service (SASS) for time management, study skills and exam mastery techniques. This will allow me to balance all my courses efficiently and put equal amount of effort for each of my courses without feeling overwhelmed, seek help from my professors and teaching assistance when I am having difficulties, acquire the time management skill, study skill and exam mastery technique from SASS in order to be successful in my studies. Another important goal to succeed in my academic endeavour is to have my mental health under control by seeking help from medical professionals, counsellors and taking prescribed medications. I am hoping that you will give me a chance to continue my studies. Thank you for considering is appeal.

Sincerely,
Momiti Talukder
