Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing this appeal to waive the 21 day late-drop deadline on the grounds that my illness has prevented me from submitting my appeal within this limit. Throughout my time at Queen¿¿s University, starting in 2007, I suffered from an eating disorder, which impaired both my ability to succeed academically, as well as my ability to make choices that would improve my likelihood of recovery. In 2008, I continued at Queen¿¿s under the supervision of the Eating Disorder Clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital, and sought additional care from my family physician, Dr. Jennifer Rae starting in 2009. Although my condition was monitored, the severity of my illness prevented my recovery. It was not until 2011, during a volunteer trip to India and Sri Lanka, that I was able to gain the perspective required to overcome my anorexia. I have no desire to return to those habits, and have since been focused on my nutritional and physical health. However, volunteering in the harsh circumstances of extreme poverty in those areas left me exposed to serious illnesses. I was diagnosed with dengue fever in December of 2012, and following that diagnosis, developed severe digestive problems that lasted for a year beyond my return from India. From December of 2012 until May 2014, I sought the attention of a tropical disease specialist, a gastroenterologist, my family doctor, and was monitored nutritionally in order to maximize my chance of recovery. These health issues have also caused me a significant amount of anxiety, which I have been addressing through counselling sessions.
My medical assistance has been extremely successful. I am now symptom free and am ready to return to school in full health. After my work in orphanages in disadvantaged rural villages of India and Sri Lanka, my intention is to complete my degree at Queen¿¿s and apply to law school with the aspirations of working in International Adoption Law. I feel ready to complete my degree, and would benefit greatly if my request to waive the 21 day deadline is approved, so that I can proceed to remove the poor grades from my transcript which in no way reflect my academic abilities, and which would otherwise prevent me from achieving my goals.
