Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern,
My academic advisor recommended I submit an academic appeal for the Fall 2016 ENGL 259 course that I ceased attending on Nov 4 2016. The reason I did not make the one term deadline to appeal, is that appealing had never occurred to me until David Youssef's suggestion on July 18 2017.
As discussed with my ENGL259 Professor Jelena, a traumatic event occurred at my workplace on Nov 1, 2016 that I immediately knew would require all of my time and focus for the foreseeable future.
I am the Manager, Organizational Health and Safety for the Abbotsford School District. On Nov 1 2016 a random violent attack at a high school resulted in the death of a 13 year old student and serious injury to another. In my role, I support over 100 staff at the school re: critical incident stress related to workplace trauma.
On Nov 4, I contacted my instructor to advise that I would not be attending class until further notice. I let her know my intention to re-take the course when next available, and that my focus was needed to support the workers following this tragic incident.
I am excited to restart my studies at Queen's am in the process of re-enrolling in ENGL259 for Fall 2017. As such, I have submitted a return to studies form, which requires notification of my other post secondary studies at SFU. My workplace professional development plan entails taking post secondary HR management training. This fall, I hope to enroll in the new Employment Relations Conflict Resolution course offered through Queen's as it aligns my degree path with my professional growth plan.
Thank you for your time to consider this appeal.
Respectfully,
Tanya Tighe
