Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Hello,
I'm seeking to have a course removed from my transcript. I was at Queen's for two years between 2008 and 2010. At that time I was in a severe depression and struggled with drinking and drug use. Academics were not a focus for me, and I'll be quite candid and state that I rarely attended lectures. I left Queen's after 2010 and returned to my hometown of Toronto. It was a vital year for my life in which I entered Alcoholics Anonymous and worked to understand that my addiction to mind-altering substances was related to social anxiety. After this year off, I felt strengthened enough to continue my studies at the University of Toronto, a choice I made primarily because it allowed me to commute from home where I received substantial emotional support from my parents. In 2014 I completed a bachelor of science degree with honors. I have been in the workforce for the past three years, but a desire to pursue medicine stirred me to study for the MCAT and apply for medical school. My MCAT results were very strong and I set my sights on applying to McMaster for admission into the Michael DeGroote School of Medicine. There is however a minimum GPA cut-off of 3.0 to even apply for the program. My marks at U of T are well-above that threshold, but unfortunately upon factoring in two courses that I failed at Queen's, my overall GPA is 2.98. For my goals in life to be sabotaged by a period in which I am grateful to have survived would be a great disappointment. I am asking with the utmost humility for one of those failed courses to be removed from my transcript.
Sincerely,
Michael Vettese

New Information: Hello,
I was a Queen's student between 2008 and 2010. For the duration of the time that I was at Queen¿¿s, I suffered from social anxiety and depression that affected my overall academic performance. I was only properly diagnosed in 2010 and received the necessary treatment to improve my life. In light of this, I am appealing to have a course dropped from my transcript. Although my overall academic performance was impacted by mental health issues, one course was particularly affected ¿¿ MATH110B. This is one of the most difficult math courses for first-year students, and I enrolled in it based on the ill-informed recommendation provided to me during my student orientation. I realized in the first month that this course was too advanced for me and should have dropped it from my course load. Instead, in a fog of depression and low self-esteem, I kept it despite not attending lectures from October onward. This was a conscious decision to validate feelings of low self-worth and that I was only deserving of a failing grade. My depression obscured the consequences of this decision and how it could impact my life later on. I took a year off to get treated for depression and anxiety after leaving Queen¿¿s, returned to university at U of T in 2011, and graduated with bachelor of science with honours in 2014. My goal was to apply to medical school at McMaster after doing well on my MCAT, until I realized that my total GPA, including the zero I received for this math course, was below the minimum cut-off of 3.0 by 0.02. If this zero is removed, I will at least have the opportunity to apply and to pursue my dream. With deep sincerity, I¿¿m appealing to have this course removed from my transcript due to the fact that had my mind been sound, I would have dropped the course and prevented the damage to my marks.
