Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop ENGL 200 (Summer, 2016) and ENGL 281 (Summer, 2016).

In the winter of 2016, the illness of two family members ¿¿ my grandparents who raised me ¿¿ worsened my mental health condition. Both of them were going through operations back in China, while I was here in Canada struggling with my academics and psychological challenges. I became severely depressed, and ended up appealing to drop three courses in the 2016 winter term.

As the winter term ends, I made a significant change to my program ¿¿ switching from Physics major to English. As an international student from China and an ESL learner, I felt the stress and urge to catch up with the English subject as soon as I could, so I decided that I should take a full load of courses in the following summer term, without realizing how bad my mental health condition really was. I assumed, wishfully, that going back to China and being able to stay with my families would help me in dealing with my psychological challenges, and that switching to a discipline that I genuinely like would allow me to be motivated and mentally ready to do school work. However, that turned out to be only wishful thinking. What happened that summer was that I was still severely troubled by my depression and was not able to concentrate on anything including academics. It was even difficult for me to do anything when I was depressed like that.

Returning to school in the late summer of 2016, I met with a school counsellor several times. We talked about appealing to drop those courses in our sessions and she agreed to support my appeal. It was also at that time that my mental health conditions were starting to improve.

This past academic year of 2016-2017 has seen a lot of changes in me. I was referred to a GP psychiatrist and have been meeting with her regularly since then to deal with my mental health conditions. In terms of academics, I have made many attempts and plans to keep myself on track ¿¿ for example, getting enrolled in the peer mentor program ¿¿ and my term GPA has improved significantly. I have a reason to believe that I am now both mentally and academically ready to keep going with the English subject. Therefore, I am appealing to drop the failed ENGL units to keep going. I hope you will give me a second chance. Thank you for taking the time considering this appeal.

Sincerely,
Yiwen Tao
