Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
My name is Jacqueline Marcoccia and I just finished my first year at Queens. I am requesting a late drop of a course I took this summer term, MATH121 ¿¿ Differential and Integral Calculus. I had taken this course during the Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 school year when I was forced to drop the class after sustaining a concussion, my 4th major concussion in 3 years. The concussion occurred in October of 2016 and my symptoms of that concussion did not fully subside until the end of February/early March of 2017. I decided to take the course again this summer as it is complementary to the degree I am pursuing and I did not want to fall behind in school. I knew that it would be difficult as I have a full time job to pay for school. Unfortunately I was not successful this summer in passing the course and this is the reason for my request for a late drop or anything else that could help me be more successful.
Due to the fact that I have had several concussions, my brain does not work in the way that it used to. I suffer from both short term and long term memory which affects me in every aspect of my life. Some days it is worse than others but it is something that has been quite difficult to deal with in terms of studying for tests and even completing assignments. I also suffer from dizziness and severe migraines almost every day, and difficulty focusing on most tasks. This affects my test performance as well as these symptoms can just worsen with no warning and there is nothing to cure them except lay in a dark room for several hours with absolutely no stimulation.
These symptoms are ongoing and they affect me in my schoolwork in several ways. It takes me a long time to watch the lecture videos for math121 (the lecture videos are a component of the course in distance studies and in the regular in term course as well) as staring at screens for long periods of time trigger stronger migraines and dizziness. I have tried several different approaches to watching the videos but I end up behind most every time.
I am someone who truly cares about academics and I have for as long as I can remember. I hope that my request will be met as I would like to be successful in my education. Please let me know if there is anything that can be done to help my situation and if further details are needed I would be happy to provide more detailed information.
