Petition Letter: To: Associate Dean (Studies)

I am requesting an appeal to my failing mark for GNDS212, taught by Dr. Patricia Salah in Fall 2016.

In October 2016, I incurred a head injury that significantly decreased my academic and physical capacity for some time. I am registered with Student Accessibility Services to mediate the consequences of my injury and provide the support needed to continue my academic pursuits at Queen¿¿s. As a result, I took an incomplete on GNDS212, under the guidance of my Academic Advisor, Melody Monte and my doctor, Dr. O¿¿Connor, Queen¿¿s Athletic Therapy. When taking the incomplete on the course, it was never brought to my attention that the course must be completed by the subsequent semester, as per Queen¿¿s Academic Regulations and Guidelines. As a result, I was granted a failing mark in GNDS212, to which I had extenuating circumstances in finishing.

Though I accept responsibility for my actions, my professor, Dr. Salah, has allotted me the time over this summer to complete the course. Now in greater academic and physical capacity, I have completed the course under Dr. Salah¿¿s supervision and support. She has graded my final essay and awarded me a mark of a B in the course. She supports my appeal claim and takes responsibility for not having informed me of the contingencies of the incomplete mark.

My future goals are to have my updated mark (B) reflected in my GPA and on my transcript. I plan on continuing my academics with Queen¿¿s and finishing my undergraduate degree in Health Studies in 2019. I plan to continue meeting with my Academic Advisor and Student Accessibility Services regularly, but do not foresee any more complications with my health or academics throughout my time at Queen¿¿s.
