Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
My name is Rachel Pekeles and I was a first year concurrent education student at Queens University in the 2016-17 academic year. I am requesting to receive aegrotat standing in ENGL 215. I have completed the course, however, I had a panic attack in the exam which left me in tears and unable to complete the work. As a result, I got 18 on my exam, a mark that does not reflect the work I put into the course. Due to my poor mark, I have failed the course, which I think is both unjust and not indicative of the work I put in.
Throughout the year I have struggled with a vast array of mental health concerns including a mood disorder, borderline personality disorder and anxiety, which have been so severe that I have spent the majority of my first year learning how to cope from day to day, advocate for myself and stay safe. I have spent countless hours in doctors¿¿ offices, therapy, counselling appointments and hospitals. I attempted to keep my mental health under control by reaching out to doctors, therapists and psychiatrists. Although I am regularly a very academically oriented person, as a result of my circumstances I found that taking this exam to be extraordinarily challenging to take and detrimental to my health.
On the advice of my psychiatrist and therapist, I am taking the upcoming academic year (2017-18) off to improve my current mental health situation over the year, so to prevent this situation from recurring in the following academic year (2018-2019). I am attending extensive therapy programs, and working with a psychiatrist to address my mental health issues. Both my psychiatrist and therapist advise that my prognosis is very good. I have also committed to extending my undergraduate degree so that I can take a lighter course load in the upcoming year(s). I sincerely hope that you grant my present request to enable me to focus on my health and safety, and grant me the opportunity to start fresh in the following academic year.

Sincerely,
Rachel Pekeles
