Dear Associate Dean

I am to appealing to have my PSYCH 100 mark be changed to a credit standing. During the 2017 summer term, I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control. Such circumstances have affected my ability to achieve my full academic potential. During my first year at Queens University I achieved A¿¿s and B¿¿s in all my classes, accumulating to a 3.21 GPA. PSYCH 100 is inconsistent with my academic abilities and does not accurately reflect my work ethic.
During the 2017 winter term I struggled with mental health issues, which only deteriorated throughout the semester. Despite regular sessions of talk therapy, it became clear that things were not going to get better without addition help. Shortly after reading week I was diagnosed with PTSD. This diagnose was difficult to hear, but in the end it was helpful. I begun to have a better understanding of the symptoms I was frequently experiencing, and what I could do to make them better.
Utilizing Queens health services and resources, I began building a network of support. This provided people to turn to in times of need and equipped me with resources to use in the face of challenges. Nonetheless, this progress did not come without setbacks. This summer I had to adjust to three new counselors (as one left for maternity leave, and the other for an employment opportunity with correctional services), which lead to interruptions and a backtrack of progress. Additionally, I had to come to terms, and deal with the implications of the relocation of a close family member, from Guelph to Calgary. She has been instrumental in supporting my education and has acted as a mentor in the absence of my parents. Not to mention, this summer has been fraught with difficult milestones in my journey to understanding my social identity as an adopted person, and preparation to report a sexual assault that occurred in 2015.
The occurrence of each circumstance was intermittent throughout the May-July summer term, some of which are still happening. Although different, they all have one thing in common, acting as a trigger of powerful emotions and unanticipated challenges accompanies by stress. I have put quite a few things behind me, and settled into a comfortable place with my current counselor at La Salle, as well, and built a strong relationship with Chaplin Kate Johnson, as an additional support person.
In reflection of the summer term, I recognize the challenges I faced, what more I could have done, and what was out of my control. I have gained a greater sense of self awareness and learned from my experience. I have reduced my course load to 12 credits each semester, decreasing academic pressures, and increase the amount of time I will have to complete academic and personal tasks. I believe I have planned accordingly to ensure success in the upcoming Fall and Winter terms. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Leia Johnson
