Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing the grades I received during the fall semester of 2015, winter semester of 2016, and fall semester of 2016. During the fall semester of 2015 I took ANAT 315, and was hoping to get the D grade changed to a credit, which I believe is just a pass/fail standing. During winter semester 2016 I took ANAT 316, KNPE 227, KNPE 255, and KNPE 265. I am hoping to get the ANAT 316 and KNPE 227 grades removed from my transcript; and KNPE 255 and KNPE 265 changed to a credit standing as well. During fall semester 2016 I took KNPE 261, HLTH 332, and ENSC 290. I am hoping to remove my grade from KNPE 261 from my transcript; change my grade in HLTH to a credit standing; and have my ENSC 290 grade of F turn into an aggregate standing since I completed at least 60 of work for the class.

Over the past couple years, I have been struggling with mental health issues, mainly depression. It has been extremely difficult for me to get through the last two years because I was not aware of all the opportunities for aid within Queen¿¿s and the community. I have been taking antidepressants for some time now, and have changed my prescription and dosage a couple times to get me to a place where I feel my best. This process has taken a while, and during this time my mood and mental health status was up and down. This made my academic and emotional journey enormously difficult to live through. I have found that I have been trying to work on getting my mental health more stable while also trying to keep my academics up and, unfortunately, during this process my academics has suffered.

I did not realize there were so many resources available to someone in my situation; my eyes have been opened to all the resources available to me through Queen¿¿s and the community regarding treating and accommodating my mental health issues. I have begun my academic accommodation process and have met with several advisors to help me with my motivation and participation in classes. I feel like I am on the right track with my mental health issues and hope that this means that my academics can be where I would like them to be. If I can get my depression under control, then I can have more time to spend on my academics and focusing on being a student and interacting with peers and professors instead of always being worried about my depression.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Hadrianna Zätterberg

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Dear Associate Dean,

I have decided that it is best for my mental health as well as my academics if I take some time away from the pressure I¿¿ve faced at school. I have enrolled as a part-time student in two classes per semester, so to not overwhelm myself during this time of healing. I am planning on living with a family in Ireland during this time, where I will have full access to my courses with my computer and their wireless internet. My family and I hope that this will be a time of restoration and self-discovery. My courses will still be through Queen¿¿s University, and I have signed up for out of country proctors in case of examinations throughout my courses. I am confident that if I can get my mental health status in check then I will be able to perform at school as well as any other student. I am truly passionate about my education and will do everything in my power to finish my degree with respectable marks.

My plan is to take this in stride. I know that I am not in a place right now where I can take on too much in terms of academics. Much of my anxiety came from the combination of assignments, participation and contribution that regular courses require. I think that if I can work on my own, at my own pace with these online courses, as well as better my mental health, that I will be able to return to school next year and obtain the marks I know I can achieve. I am certain that the marks I have received over the past couple of semesters are not a proper demonstration of the work I can accomplish. During the academic year, I would try to tell myself that there was not anything wrong with me and that I just needed to push through, but this only made things worse. I realize now, after seeking assistance, that I must embrace and understand what is going on to be able to overcome it and grow. When my mental health is in check and I am comfortable with returning to Queen¿¿s University, I plan on finishing my undergrad in two year instead of the one I have left. I believe that this will allow me to take my time with my courses and not rush me back into the state I was before. Once I complete my undergrad I am hoping to attend college to become an ultrasound technician. This is something that interests me a great deal and I trust that I am capable of doing this job. The medial field has always interest me, and the idea of helping people motivates me.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Hadrianna Zatterberg
