Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,

I am contacting you because I wish to obtain a credit standing for FREN 106 course.

Unfortunately, over the course of the summer, I had many extenuating circumstances that impeded my ability to succeed in the course to the best of my ability.

At the beginning of the summer, I was studying to write the MCAT for a second time and planned on continuing working on my course for the remainder of the summer. Unfortunately, that stressful situation was hardened by increased anxiety which hindered my performance. My mental state was so severe and concerning, that I saw a professional for an emergency appointment on June 1st for cognitive behavioral therapy. He suggested I continue my medication and focus on writing my MCAT (which was June 19th) and focus on one thing at a time.

I had to leave the country for personal reasons on June 21st, and planned to return on July 26th. I was going to work on my course on my computer while I was away.

On July 1st I lost my purse which contained my medication that helps me manage anxiety. Because I was not in Canada, I could not get a refill on the prescription or get new medication which worsened my condition. Without my medication, it was very difficult to manage my anxiety and it prevented me from doing well in the course. The come down off my medication worsened my symptoms, also affecting my sleep and mood and made everything harder to endure and less manageable. Other obstacles and personal issues, especially without my medication, made it extremely difficult to perform academically.

Since I have returned I have started several measures to help me manage my anxiety during the school year to guarantee my anxiety from harming my studies again. These measures include returning onto my medication, seeing a therapist regularly and doing yoga. I am dismayed that my mental illness affected my ability to succeed, and am trying to do everything in my power to get better.

I have always prioritized my academics, and the low grade from the summer greatly weakens my ability to be a competitive candidate for graduate studies.

I could not appeal the grade earlier because I needed to physically meet with my doctor in Kingston (where I got the original diagnosis and prescription) to obtain the document attached to provide proof of my condition. I was in Oakville until the end of summer until I moved back to school and during that time, I obtained a letter from my psychiatrist in person to start my appeal letter.

Thank you kindly for your time and understanding. If you need any other documentation, please let me know.

Best regards,
Marina Galentovsky
