Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am a third year Commerce student, and I am taking three Commerce courses and two Arts electives this fall. I was originally enrolled in SPAN 111, intro to Spanish. I am fluent in French and English, and I thought it would be great to pick up a new language. I went to the first week of class, but struggled to engage with the material. I dropped the course after the first week. I was extremely distracted last week (more to follow), and hastily enrolled into ASTR 102 Friday afternoon to ensure that I had a full course load.
Last week, my roommate who has been battling mental health issues for a long time told me that he was not well. When we were in first year, he told me that he would sometime feel sad and thought that he was depressed. I have always made huge efforts to be there for him as a friend and system of support. Last week was the anniversary of his Mothers passing and this was a huge emotional trigger for him. I was extremely concerned for his well-being and contacted his family. He went home for a few days and came back with medication and a plan to tackle his mental health struggles. During this time, I was extremely distracted from school and missed a lot of class. More importantly, this event brought up feelings that I had been suppressing for a long time and I became more aware of my own mental health struggles.
Unable to focus on my academics, I made the rushed decision to enroll in a course that does not suit my interests. Today, I sat down and went through the first two weeks of material and confirmed that I am not interesting in pursuing ASTR 102. The basis of my academic appeal is rooted on the fact that I was not in good mental health to make a rational decision regarding my course selection.
