Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to the faculty's decision that I am not able to add a course after the deadline of Friday, September 22.
Prior to the course add/drop deadline, I had added myself to SPAN 111, section 003, to the first spot on the waitlist, hoping that one person would drop the course before the deadline, allowing myself to be admitted into the course thereafter. Due to my lack of understanding of the process, I had thought that if I was on the waitlist for a course before the add/drop deadline, that once the deadline passed, I would be able to switch into an open section of the course if I were not admitted into the original section on which I had been waitlisted.
The section of SPAN 111 that I am requesting to enter is section 008, on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Today being Monday, September 25, the week's lecture has not yet occurred, which gives me the ability to start catching up on course material prior to this week's lecture.
As a first year student in only my third week here at Queen's University, I feel that it takes time for students such as myself to learn and adapt to the new processes and technicalities that go along with the tough transition into university. I would ask that you please consider the simplicity and sincerity behind my misunderstanding regarding the process of the course add/drop deadline. As well, I have received written permission from both the course instructor, Dr. Claudio Palomares Salas, and the undergraduate chair of the department of languages, literature, and cultures, Dr. Cristiana Zaccagnino which I will attach along with this letter.
If granted, I will speak with the instructor, Dr. Salas, to hear from him what is required of myself to catch up to each other student in the course. On the contrary, If I am not able to be admitted into this course, I will be enrolled in only 9 credits for the semester, leaving me fairly behind in my academic plan entering the winter semester - not an ideal place to be for a new student. With everything said, I really do hope that you are able to understand and accept my circumstances.

Academic Plan: As mentioned in my appeal letter, if granted approval, I will speak with the course instructor, Dr. Claudio Palomares Salas, to understand what I must do in order to catch up on the course material that I have missed. I will dedicate extra time if needed, to ensure that I meet each required deadline for all assignments in the course. Also mentioned in my letter, if not granted approval, I will be fall behind in my academic plan in terms of credits, and will be forced to experience a much more stressful winter semester and years to follow, in order to catch up.
