Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am submitting this letter for appeal to be added to Astronomy 101-001. I fully understand that the deadline to add and drop courses was September 22nd, but due to extenuating circumstances, I was unable to fulfill these requirements. During the week of September 18th, I was diagnosed with Pneumonia by Dr. Butt after going to the La Salle walk-in clinic on campus. I was prescribed to take an antibiotic (Clarithromycin) and told to rest for the week while I recovered. As far as confirmation of my illness I have an email from the doctor¿¿s office requesting my chest x-ray I was asked to complete after meeting with the Doctor. I am sure the clinic itself has a record of me registering and attending the clinic that day, if necessary. During the week I was unable to attend any lectures or tutorials, as well as all football practices and team meetings. Because of this, I was unable to get a feel for most my classes typical work week and determine which ones I liked and disliked. Specifically, I was unable to assess my liking of Math 111, a course I have since firmly decided is not for me.

I have already confirmed that Astronomy 101-001 fits into my course schedule and after speaking to friends in that class, I am confident that it is a better fit for me. I am aware of the text and material required for this class and am prepared to purchase it. Unfortunately, I have already dropped Math 111 as I believed that I could pay the late course addition fee online and do the course swap on SOLUS. After realizing this is not possible I went to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and was informed of the correct process to go about adding a course late. For this reason, it would mean a lot to me if I could get added to this course as soon as possible.

I understand that the deadline to drop and add courses was fairly set to avoid situations and inconveniences such as these, and usually, I am not one to miss deadlines. However, due to my illness, I did not have a chance to assess my classes and make my desired changes with any sort of confidence or justification.

I hope you understand the restrictive situation I was in and will approve my appeal to be added to Astronomy 101-001.
