Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My name is Harris Wilson; I am a second year BAH student registered in a DEVS plan. I am appealing to add the course SOCY 122 as it is past the deadline to do so.

As many undergraduate students do, I realized that I had picked the wrong major for my plan and decided to change my focus. I am very interested in various¿sociology studies and found that the courses offered in the SOCY¿higher levels interest me far more than my current plan. Unfortunately, I did not take SOCY 122 in my first year and therefore am slightly behind in my planning, however still very eager to¿begin making¿progress. While I was still able to add courses in the first two weeks of school, I changed around my schedule quite a bit, never quite satisfied with my result. It has been a very difficult start for myself as a student who is eager to focus on a plan that suits my interests and academic skill set, and this has caused me quite a bit of stress and anxiety. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression three years ago, and occasionally the pressures of school can trigger certain temporary episodes for me. Because of this, I find it very important to my well-being and general experience at Queen¿¿s to be in a plan that fits well with me. Based on the course descriptions and advice from peers in various sociology plans, sociology sounds like a much more proper field of study for me to set goals and make progress in as opposed to the DEVS program I registered in earlier this summer.

As I mentioned, I will be setting both academic and social goal for myself in my following years of the BAH program. My number one goal is to maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 in all of my upcoming classes. To achieve this goal, it would be a tremendous advantage to be studying a subject that I genuinely find fascinating. I also believe that the course load in the SOCY major or medial plan will put less pressure on myself and this would help me avoid or mitigate the anxious feelings I have experienced and allow me to take advantage of all the wonderful things that Queen¿¿s offers its students outside of the classroom. After consulting with my academic advisor today, I truly hope to pursue a major or medial plan in sociology and only regret that I hadn¿¿t realized this earlier.

Please get back to me at your earliest convenience, thank you.

After contacting Professor Beamish and discussing the class syllabus, it is clear that I have missed some material from the first few weeks but agreed by the both of us that catching up and succeeding in SOCY 122 is certainly doable.

Thank you.
