Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am appealing to request the 21-day deadline for an academic appeal due to the reason that I had two mental health assessments conducted later in my last academic year (2016-2017). GRMN 101 and GEOL 104 are two courses I took in the fall semester of 2016 and did not pass due to two mental illnesses, the first being major depression and anxiety, which was diagnosed in March 2017, and ADHD, which was diagnosed in the summer of 2017.

During the last academic year, I had suicidal thoughts and until one day I made a plan and almost took action on it until I realized what I would be losing. After that day I started resorting to substance abuse. All of which, was taking, place towards the end of the first semester. Both conditions paralyzed my ability to conduct my daily activities, and ultimately took a toll on my academics, physical and mental health. During the second semester, I decided to seek out help from the Student Wellness Services to get my life back on track. From there I was diagnosed with major depression and created a plan to find a way back to a healthy mental state, which I still am working towards. I was put on medications, created a regular exercise routine and worked with a counselor, all of which I still am doing today.

My second diagnosis, which was for ADHD, took place in the summer of 2017 after a doctor at the Student Wellness Services and my family doctor recommended I get an assessment completed. Both doctors and previous teachers were all concerned that I could be suffering from this condition by observing my behavioral tendencies as well as my parent¿¿s observations. The doctor who diagnosed my ADHD indicated that my condition did have an impact on my academics from a very young age, which prevented me from having adequate focus, and mental effort required to do well in an academic setting. Secondly, the doctor also concluded that my ADHD could lead me to depressive symptoms when triggered from external sources. Finally, with the diagnosis of my ADHD, it was also found that the condition can lead me to have a lack of self-control and addictive behaviour, all of which combined with my depression. In order to deal with this condition right now, I am visiting the Student Wellness Services for bi-weekly checkups, also I am taking prescribed medication, visiting academic councilors and am following a neurological training system called ¿¿NeuroTracker¿ to help build cognitive functions affected by ADHD.

I am asking for the right to waive the 21-day deadline for the details outlined above, and primarily due to the late diagnosis of both conditions, due to my inability to realize them at a later point in time. Meeting with academic councilors led me to this resource for a second chance, and allowed me to setup routines to deal with both conditions simultaneously, as well as reducing my course load and completing my degree in five years. I do have in interest in succeeding academically and working on myself during my time at Queen¿¿s, this is why I am asking for a second chance and the right to make an appeal.

Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Committee,

I am writing to request an appeal to drop two courses from my transcript, GRMN 101 and GEOL 104, both of which were taken in the fall semester of 2016. There were two main factors that led to my current academic standing, the first being my major depression and the second being my ADHD, both of which were undiagnosed until a later time in the year.

In March 2017 a doctor from the Student Wellness Services diagnosed me with major depression after I had constructed a plan for a suicidal attempt and was close to taking action, late during the first semester. My depression caused me to become withdrawn from my family, friends, wellbeing, and academics, all of which are important facets of my life. During that time I felt that nothing mattered to me and my life would soon come to an end and ultimately my ability to continue on with daily activities and responsibilities had become precluded. After seeking out help and realizing I had neglected the primary part of my life, it is needless to say I was very disappointed and scared of what would happen.

In the summer of 2017, I was diagnosed with ADHD by a psychologist in Milton, Ontario, after I received recommendations from my family doctor, a doctor at the Student Wellness Services and my teachers. After the diagnosis, there was an indication that my condition affected my inability to focus, and required mental effort to succeed in an academic setting. Secondly, from the diagnosis, it was also found that my ADHD had a high potential of leading me to depression when triggered by external high-stress factors and a lack of self-restraint. These factors were triggered by high pressures and stressful situations, which caused me to become withdrawn and neglectful.

To combat my depression and ADHD, I have been taking medication, a reduced course load, implemented dietary changes, following a consistent exercise and academic routine as well as having quit the use of alcohol. Although I can have depressive episodes today, I have future appointments booked with a mental health counselor to help me navigate my mental health, effectively and stay clear of any negative feelings. More specifically to manage my ADHD, I see a doctor bi-weekly and am using a brain training system to help reduce symptoms. Mutually, I have reduced my course load and plan to complete a BAH in Economics in a five year period. I also consult with an academic counselor when needed to help me deal with academic pressures and any questions I have.

I am asking for both courses to be dropped due to the reasons outlined above and the corrective measures I am taking today in order to prevent this from happening again. It will give me chance to reach my current academic and postgraduate goals in the future. Thank you for taking your time to review my request, please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mehtaab Boparai
