Dear Dr. Bénard,
Re: Academic Appeal to waive deadline for incomplete course work
I am requesting permission to submit incomplete course work for PHIL 273.
As per Academic Regulation 10.3.4., a student has one term to complete all incomplete course requirements for a given course. Any further extensions based on extenuating circumstances will require an academic appeal to the Office of the Associate Dean, with support from the instructor.
I have secured permission from Professor Paul Fairfield, instructor of PHIL 273, to submit the remaining course work.
Following a break from studies, I returned to Queen¿¿s for the 2016-2017 academic year and took six courses for both the fall and winter semesters. The demands of a full course load (and doing well in them) together with my degenerative disc condition proved to be too onerous. The ruptured discs in my lower back often cause chronic and debilitating nerve pain which makes prolonged sitting impossible. Through various pain medications and physiotherapy, I have been able to keep the pain at bay. But sleep deprivation and prolonged sitting always seem to aggravate it. I have kept the diagnosis to myself until now because I did not want to come to terms with my condition. I did not want to accept the permanant and irreversible nature of my injury. Attached hereto is a copy of the MRI report of my lumbar spine.
I have completed all course work for PHIL 273 save for one essay. Should this request be granted, I plan to submit the remaining course work and a further request to allow me to obtain credit for PHIL 273. If I successfully obtain credit for PHIL 273, together with pending credit for HIST 125, I plan to graduate with a General degree from the Faculty of Arts and Science. This request is submitted at the advice of my academic counsellor.
Thank you for your consideration of this request. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours truly,
Jerry Feng
