Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am Jaycee Farmer, a current second year student of Queen's University. I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program, with a major in Life Sciences and a minor in Mathematics. I am appealing to drop CHEM 281 (Fall 2017).
Extenuating circumstances beyond my control have recently arisen, inhibiting me from performing to the best of my academic abilities in this course. Those include, severe anxiety caused by public and social interaction preventing me from being able to attend classes on a regular basis, as well as depression caused by a recent family death (November, 2017). These psychological challenges have caused me great struggle in independently learning and keeping up with my studies in CHEM 281, specifically throughout the months of October and November of this semester (affecting my performance on both midterm 1 and 2). During this period, I sought out medical attention from my family doctor for treatment of my severe acne causing my social anxiety. A letter from my physician is attached, supporting the details of my mentally hindering condition.
Should my appeal be granted, I plan to achieve academic success in the future by seeking out more psychological attention through the maintenance of regular meetings with a guidance counsellor. I may also deal with such circumstances by lightening my future course load or considering other program options to relieve the mental stress contributing to my anxiety. It is a condition I have coped with since 2013, and it continues to affect my personal and academic life to a great extent. I will plan to meet with an academic advisor in the upcoming semester to consider other possibilities as well, to ensure my academic success at Queen's University.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Sincerely,

Jaycee Farmer
