Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to drop ANAT 315 (Fall, 2017) due to extenuating circumstances relating to surgery to treat a disease affecting my hip joints.
I am a member of the Queens Football team. In the Fall of 2016, my doctor advised I was born with boney abnormalities on the heads of my femur bones. These abnormalities have resulted in damage to the cartilage in my hip joints. I have been in constant pain since the beginning of the 2016 football season. In February 2017, I had surgery on my right hip to shave off the abnormal bone formation and repair the cartilage in the joint. I was bedridden for one week and on crutches for four weeks, and was instructed not to bear weight on my right leg during the time I was on crutches. I was prescribed pain medication which affected my ability to study. The pain and discomfort of the injury, the lack of mobility during the recovery period and the side effects of the pain medication had a negative effect on my academic performance during the 2016-2017 academic year.
On November 14, 2017 I had surgery on my left hip to shave off the abnormal bone formation and repair the cartilage in the hip joint. I have found the side effects of the anesthesia and the pain medication to be more pronounced following the second surgery. Once again, I will be bedridden for one week and on crutches for four weeks, and I expect to be taking prescription pain medication for two weeks. Based on my previous experience in February, I will not be able to study or learn during the time I am on pain medication.
The surgery and recovery period during November and December coincides with a particularly critical time in the ANAT 315 course. My other courses are less busy during this period of time. I will not be able to complete the required work in ANAT 315 during my recovery period. If I am able to drop this course, I will be able to direct my energy to successfully completing my four remaining courses, and hopefully maintain a higher GPA overall for the year as a result. In hindsight, I wish I had requested to drop a course during my recovery period last February, as this may have enabled me to achieve higher marks in my remaining courses.
My plan to cope with the extenuating circumstance of the hip surgery is to enroll in ANAT 315 next year. I have contacted Milana McNamee in the Athletics Department and Melody Monte in the undergraduate Department of Kinesiology and studies and they have both explained the implications of dropping a course and how it can affect my other core courses to come. ANAT 315 is not a prerequisite for any of the courses I need to take next year. If necessary, I will enroll in a course next summer to obtain additional credits towards completing my degree.
Sincerely,
Will Ruddy
