Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am looking to appeal to drop the course Physics 206 due to some family abuse issues that have been ongoing for several months and have escalated in the last few weeks. I was forced to leave home and reside in emergency housing on Campus because my mother had been physically, emotionally and financially abusive over the last few months. This has escalated in that she was recently signed off of work and her money problems made things very unstable for us. As I was living with her I felt obligated to take care of her various physical and financial needs. In the last month she informed me that despite me giving her money for rent and some support being provided, she had not been paying the rent and we were now going to be evicted. This worry caused me to feel physically sick and alone. I was not able to do assignments during this period and was anxious that if I told anyone she would be angry and become volatile. As well, the internet and such were also shut off which made the environment not only dangerous but unfit for schoolwork. In the last two weeks, I have spoken with accommodations services at Queens as well as counseling services to try and find a solution that would help me salvage the semester. While my other courses I have hope of still earning a credit, in this class the concepts are too difficult and I have missed far to much to try and catch up before the exam date.
