Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to drop BIOL 110 and PSYC 100 past the deadline.
This semester, I moved to Vancouver from Kingston to be in the care of my parents while continuing my studies. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II, Borderline Personality Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder the March of this year. After careful consideration, I have decided to continue my studies online.
In order to be my best self as a student, I took the minimum required courses to receive full-time student funding -- three courses. At the beginning of the school year, I was confident that I would be able to balance these courses, but the past few weeks have proven me otherwise.
Due to not being able to receive full health care in Vancouver, I have not been able to find a psychiatrist. I have been researching and calling various clinics but due to my financial limitations, the waitlists for psychiatrists and counselling services that I can afford have been very long, leaving me with minimal mental health care for my illnesses.
Not only that, many counselling services that I can afford have refused to care for me due to the nature of my conditions, a combination of a personality disorder and a mood disorder.
I have been under the care of a family physician in a walk-in clinic to take care of my medication, but to have someone manage my emotional turmoil and medication at the same time was not an option for me.
Furthermore, in the past few months, I was informed of a death of a close family member. My paternal grandfather passed away, and my father had to go back to South Korea to attend the funeral.
Seeing my father be heartbroken at the death of his father took a toll on me as well, which disrupted my studies.
For the future, I have decided to continue my studies part-time. I have minimized my course load this year from 100 to 60 but it has been proven that I am unable to handle this amount. Therefore in the upcoming semester I have decided to only take two courses, which is a part-time amount (40).
I have attached my grandfather's death certificate. Unfortunately, I could not place a translated version of it, therefore it is in Korean. I have also attached a letter from my psychotherapist last year that states that I have been having mental health problems last year as well. My counsellor from last year, Janet Roloson, has also submitted documentations. I do not have a copy of it myself but if the documentation was submitted along with an appeal I requested last year.
