Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to take my end of term exam for SOCY 344 at a later date in January and also requesting Aegrotat standing in SOCY 336 and SOCY 384 as I have completed the required 60 percent.
I am requesting this appeal, for SOCY 344, and Aegrotat standing, for SOCY 336 and SOCY 384, because my uncle, who has ALS, took a turn for the worse yesterday, November 29th 2017, and the doctors do not think he will come back from this due to him developing pneumonia which is life threatening at this point. He woke up on November 29th having a very hard time to breathe which lead to the ambulance being called and ultimately finding excess fluid around his lungs while at the hospital. He has been on oxygen 24/7 for the past few weeks and has progressively gotten worse. Today, November 30th, due to his wishes, he has been take to Agape House Hospice where he will be made comfortable and will remain there until he passes away. Throughout this fall academic semester, he has been slowly declining, in which I was barely coping with his condition and still managed to obtain good grades all throughout this semester, however, now that things have taken a turn for the worse I do not believe I will be able to cope with my exams. This has overall affected my academic performance in which I do not believe I will be in the right mind set to complete my exams as my uncle has been more like a father to me my whole life as my actual father has never been a part of life nor does he want to be. As an international student, I find it very important that I return to Bermuda to be there during his last few days to show the support he has shown me throughout my life. I feel distracted, out of place, and have high anxiety at the moment and do not see it possible to go through with these upcoming examinations. I have spoken with an academic councilor for the Arts and Science department on November 30th in which she finds moving my exam for SOCY 344 to a later date in January and requesting Aegrotat standing in SOCY 336 and SOCY 384 are the best options. I will be leaving Kingston to take a train to Toronto on Saturday, December 2nd, and flying to Bermuda on Sunday December 3rd. I will be returning to Queen¿¿s University for second semester on January 7th. I cannot stress enough how important it is for me to see my uncle before he passes from this terrible disease which has taken away his mobility, his speech, and his love for life. I have been determined all semester to finish off the term with amazing grades, however, I do not find it to be possible to sit these exams and I hope you are able to understand. I have tried my best all semester and have been doing well in regards to my grades, but I do not believe I can go on to sit these exams.
As a side note, for the online appeal process, the step two section which asks you to input the exact class and type of appeal would not let me input my appeal for moving my exam to a later date for SOCY 344. I called the academic advisor office and they said to just input it as an Aegrotat standing, however, it is not for that, I am appealing to move the date of my exam for SOCY 344.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: For my future plan, should my appeal and Aegrotat standing be granted, I will sit my SOCY 344 exam in January or whenever the professor is able to have me sit the exam and take an incomplete grade until I sit the exam. For my final class, SOCY 309, I have an essay that is due on Sunday, December 10th, which I will be working on while at home as I find I will take my time and slowly complete it. There is no examination for SOCY 309. Once I return to Queen¿¿s I will make an additional appointment with an academic councilor for the Arts and Science department to talk about sitting my SOCY 344 exam and what I need to do for the following semester to maintain my grades.
