Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to request a waiver of the one term deadline for appealing for a late drop of a course. The course in question is from first year, and I am now in fourth year.
I was not aware until very recently that appealing for a late drop after the course has finished was even an option. This came up in conversations with friends. I met with Spring Forsberg (an academic advisor with Arts and Sciences) about the matter and she suggested that I send this letter. I have met with advisors, including Spring, in the past, and have never had this suggested to me as a course of action. Had I been aware of this option at the beginning of my second year, before the one term deadline on September 15th, I would certainly have appealed then. On the one hand, it is my responsibility to know my options as a student at Queen's, but on the other hand, it can be difficult for a first year or early second year student to become aware of this kind of thing, especially if one has been in the sort of position that necessitates this kind of appeal in the first place. By the time the deadline for an appeal had passed, I was looking more toward the future (at the time) and less at dealing with what had been an unfortunate start at Queen's.
The format I was given for writing an appeal letter suggests that I describe a future plan for achieving academic success. Since first year, I have worked hard to manage the issues that led me to need this kind of appeal in the first place, and I have become a very successful student, placing on the Dean's Honour List in both second and third year. I plan to continue to be that kind of student in my fourth and final year at Queen's.
I want to note as well that while there is no documentation attached to this request, I can provide documentation regarding the circumstances that affected me in first year if and when this appeal is granted.
