Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Atkinson,
I am appealing to drop PHIL273 (Fall, 2017). A letter from Dr. Stephanie Butt at Student Wellness Services is my supporting documentation, confirming that I was seriously academically impaired beginning in September and continuing through October and November.
In September, I began struggling with my mental health. For several weeks, I rarely left my room. I found that it was impossible to concentrate on any text or video, I was often unable to sleep at night, and I felt completely apathetic towards my problems, my life, and the things that I was losing due to these weeks of inaction.
On November 7th, I went to Dr. Butt and was prescribed medication used to treat anxiety and depression. I also began seeing a therapist, and my parents came up for a weekend to support me.
During my impairment, I fell significantly behind in my classes, and as I began to recover, it became clear that I would not be able to complete all of the work before the end of term. However, by the time I had sought help, the deadline for dropping classes had passed.
I spoke to an academic advisor and decided that the best course of action would be to drop the two classes in which I had completed the least work. One, PHIL250, was a two-term course in which I was able to drop the winter term, but I missed the deadline for dropping PHIL273.
I spoke to my other professors and have made arrangements to catch up on the outstanding work and missed classes. I will be taking a summer course to make up the credits from my dropped courses, and I will continue to see a therapist and keep in contact with Dr. Butt regarding medication.
If I am formally diagnosed with an ongoing condition, I may apply for accommodations in the future, but I am hopeful that I can move past this episode.
