Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop the course HLTH 101 (Fall 2017). For the past six years I have suffered from a chronic gastrointestinal disorder. In September I had reached a state of remission and naturally signed up for five courses. However, near the beginning of November my health declined and I began experiencing intense abdominal pain and nausea, both of which are part of my disorder. I did not drop this course by the November 3rd deadline because at the time I was feeling okay, but with the sudden relapse that occurred soon after, I realized that I could not continue with this course while taking proper care of my health.
My illness has effected my academic performance as I am often too nauseas or in too much pain to attend classes. Doing coursework has also became much more difficult as it is very hard to focus when I am in such intense pain. Often times I am bedridden and unable to perform basic tasks of daily living.
In this course I have made steps to work around my illness such as asking for extensions on assignments and emailing my professor and TA to notify them of my condition and to catch up on anything I missed in class. I have talked with my counselor from accessibility services (whom I am registered with) about adding additional accommodations and dropping this course to take care of my health. I was advised to drop this course. I have also talked with my doctor (who has known me for many years and is very familiar with my condition) about my situation and she strongly advised me to drop this course for the sake of my health. As a future plan, I will continue to meet regularly with my doctor to monitor and receive treatment for my illness. I will also continue to meet with accessibility services to talk about help or accommodations that I may need in the future. I have also reduced my course load by dropping my SOCY 122 course, which will help my academic success in my remaining three courses. I plan to take a summer course this year and to complete my degree in five years instead of four. I am confident that in taking these future steps I will be able to succeed academically.
Sincerely,
Leah Altrows
