Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies;
I am appealing for Credit Standing (CR) in SOCY 275 (Fall, 2017). The reason behind this appeal is due to an extenuating circumstance that was beyond my control. On October 15th 2017, because of a severe mental health medical emergency, I was hospitalized at Kingston General Hospital from 11:30 am to 12:00 am the following morning. Subsequently, I went home to Toronto for 2 weeks from October 18th to November 1st. This event impacted my academic performance in SOCY 275 as the test dates and assignment deadlines unfortunately lined up almost perfectly with the timeline of the event, and since I was not in the proper mindset, I was unable to perform academic work that is up to my usual standards. The following is a list of test dates and/or assignment deadlines, with their respective connection to my Extenuating Circumstance; Midterm 1 (October 13th, 2017): Two days prior to hospitalization; beginning of the lead-up to hospitalization; Term Paper (Due October 27, 2017 (Extended to November 7th, 2017)): Written while on leave from classes and during the recovery process; Midterm 2 (November 14th, 2017:) Had just returned to school, and as a result of missing 2 weeks of material, was difficult to perform fully to my normal standard. I was affected by the event for the 2 weeks I was home, however my academic performance was significantly affected prior to the event, as well as in the immediate weeks following. Although I received the notes for missed classes in my absence, it was still difficult to perform to the best of my ability as I was unable to go to TA's or my professor due to the fact I was home.
In order to deal with the events that had gone on, myself and my parents spoke to the doctors at Kingston General Hospital's Emergency Room who deemed that I was not under any immediate risk of a repeated occurrence. Less than 24 hours following my hospital discharge, myself and my mom spoke to a counsellor at LaSalle on campus to discuss taking leave from the school. During my medical leave, I met with my family doctor on numerous occasions to discuss steps for me to return to Kingston in the healthiest and most positive way. Now that I am back in Kingston, I have regularly schedule 1-hour appointments with a psychotherapist to ensure that I stay on the right track in the recovery process.
In order to achieve academic success, I plan to maintain regular meetings with my psychotherapist, as well as potentially going on medication for coping. This will support my academic goals, as by talking to a professional, I am able to receive proper guidance and advice as to how to take care of myself to ensure that no repeats of this medical emergency occurs and that I can continue to be successful in my studies here at Queen's University.
