Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies)
My name is Christopher Aben and I am a first year Arts and Science student appealling to drop my Biology 102 class without academic penalty. On November 24th, 2017, I obtained a concussion that forced me to postpone all my exams until after the break through academic accommodation. I saw a doctor and she gave me a verification of personal health form. On the form, the doctor wrote she suspected it would only last for 2-4 weeks, but I can easily get another doctor¿¿s note explaining my current issues. Concussions are a very hard injury to gage how long it takes to heal because all head injuries are different. In the beginning, I was trying to ignore my symptoms and get on with school because I¿¿m the type of person that likes to finish what I start, but my symptoms only worsened. Whenever I tried studying my vision got blurry and the pressure in my head would build up to the point where I¿¿d have to rest in complete isolation and silence to feel any sort of relief. Originally, I was hoping to be fully recovered in time to write my examinations and start my new classes, but as time has passed, my symptoms have not improved at all. I get headaches while trying to complete the simplest of tasks and require medication just to fall asleep. I am not seeking an appeal for the other courses, as I am able to drop them without suffering any academic penalty. As of right now, I am stressed with exams looming overhead and for new classes that will have to be started concurrently after the break. It would take a lot of stress off my back if I can withdraw from all my classes to have no withstanding courses on my academic record at university. I also did not particularly like the classes I was taking, nor did I like the program. Therefore, no academic record would permit me to reapply for different programs pertaining to my interests either at Queen¿¿s or at other universities for next year. The other reason behind appealing this course is because if I do write my Biology exam after an unknown amount of time, this will only be the completion of one course and in order to be considered a transfer applicant, you must have at least 4 courses completed. It¿¿s a super frustrating position to be in because I tried really hard on all my work before being concussed, but sometimes things happen out of your control. This would enable me to fully dedicate my time to recovering, as well as put me in a position to easily apply again for next year. I am currently undergoing a rehab program known as SHIFT, specifically designed for concussions and hope I will gain some relief soon.
