Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop DEVS 100 (Summer, 2014) from my record due to extenuating circumstances/
This past February my grand-father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and passed away this August. During my first year at Queens I chose to take four courses as opposed to five courses each semester. After discovering the possibility to take online summer courses, I registered for DEVS 100. During the first few weeks of the course, I was completing readings and staying up to date and received a B- on the first assignment. However, following news that my grand-father was getting worse and that my dad was flying back to Scotland to visit my focus began to slip as I became more and more worried about my grand-fathers health. My family and I then decided to take a trip out to Scotland to visit my grand-father along with my dad. However, during these weeks my access to internet was limited as was available time as the purpose of the trip was to see my grand-father and be able to do some activities before things got much worse. When we returned to Toronto after a two week trip, it was hard to fully return to daily life as we knew we would be flying back out to Scotland relatively soon. My parents decided it would be best to wait until I had completed my exam to leave again, and so the day after I completed my exam we were on a plane back to Scotland and were lucky enough to say good-bye. I was very affected by my grand-fathers illness, and had been since February however as things did get very serious very quickly this past summer, it was very hard for me to deal with and I still do everyday. After speaking with my academic adviser, she suggested seeking our grief counseling as apart of my future plan. This is something that I fully intend to take use of this year as I am still dealing with some grief. It would be much appreciated and extremely helpful if my appeal was accepted and I thank you very much for your consideration.
