Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Ning Feng. I am a fourth-year international student from China. I am appealing to having my CLST 200 as Credit Standing (CR) on my transcript. In the summer of 2014, I went through a murder-suicide of two of my very close friends back at home in China; my best friend from middle school was strangled by her boyfriend. Her boyfriend who was also a best friend of mine committed suicide on the same day.
The tragedy happened three years ago, but grieving is a process that requires a lot of time and energy. Since it happened, I have been seeking help from all kinds of resources on campus (counsellors, Peer Support Centre). I have been seeing Arunima on occasion for the past three years. In the last three years, I tried my best to keep up with my academic works, but grievance would hit me time to time. Grievance usually hit me the hardest between the end of October to end of November; because my friends¿¿ birthdays were on October 28 and November 28. This year it was especially hard, after in the middle of October I ran into one of my middle school classmates who knew both of my friends. We talked about what happened. All the memories just came back. After the run in, I started feeling tremendous amount of stress to a point I started having panic attack in class. I went to see the Doctor at LaSalle; she suggested me because my panic attack was not an often occurrence, I need to relax and self-care. I tried hard to keep my life normal by going to classes and eat meal on time as much as possible. But overall it was not easy to relax and take time for myself as Doctor suggested, since I am in my fourth year and I am an international student with English being my second language. I took 4 courses last semester. I was especially stressed out about CLST 200, because there are a lot of materials to remember but I was too stressed out to stay focused.
While I managed to get relatively decent grades on my other 3 courses last semester, I only received a C on CLST 200. A ¿¿C¿ was much lower than my expectation. I believe a C was not a correct reflection of my ability. Furthermore, CLST 200 only had two assessments: one midterm and one final, both were in the format of multiple choices and each worth 50. Having only two evaluations in the form of multiple choices gave me very limited opportunities to demonstrate my understanding on the subject. In the future, I will continue consulting with Arunima. I will continue to self-care by eating and sleeping on time, like what Doctors suggested. However, right now I think it is in my best interest and my very hope that I can have CLST 200 marked as CR on my transcript.
